A Supreme Court lawyer today filed a writ petition with the High Court challenging legality of Kazi Reazul Hoque’s appointment as chairman of National Human Rights Commission.

SC lawyer Eunus Ali Akond submitted the petition saying Kazi Reazul was appointed in violation of relevant provision of the National Human Rights Commission Act 2007.

According to section 6 (3) of the Act, a person cannot be appointed as member of the commission for more than two terms.

Kazi Reazul was earlier appointed as a member of the NHRC for two terms, he in the petition said adding a chairman of the commission is also a member of the NHRC.

A legal expert is supposed to be the chairman but Reazul is not a legal expert. That is why his appointment as a chairman is illegal, Eunus said.

In the petition, he prayed to the HC to ask Reazul to explain under what authority he has been holding the office as the commission chairman

The HC is likely to hear the petition on Sunday.
