Human rights groups including Voice of People, Peoples Vigilance Committee on Human Rights and Bunkar Dastkar Adhikar Manch organised a People’s Tribunal on situation of Education and development among Muslim Weavers and Artisans on Wednesday.
Sayeda Hameed, member, Planning Commission of India, chaired the tribunal and heard their problems. The tribunals report would be sent to the Prime Minister.
PVCHR convener Lenin Raghuvanshi apprised Hameed of the plight of the weavers and artisans of the region. He said over 1.5 lakh weavers were no longer weavers by profession and they had switched over to other professions like rickshaw-pulling. Their localities lacked basic civic amenities. Most of the handloom weavers were under heavy debt and many of them committed suicide, he informed.
The incident of police firing in Bajadiha area during Holi festival was raised during the hearing. Two persons were killed and many others were injured in the incident. Besides, the issue of children’s death due to malnutrition was also raised. Weavers from different places took part in the tribunal.
