Promoting Democracy, Upholding Human Rights

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) has called for the urgent attention of all Government and Non-Governmental Institutions to act promptly to take into consideration the needs and capabilities of persons with disabilities in order to ensure an inclusive society for all.

The Human Rights Commission says it appreciates the measures taken up to date by the Government and Non –Government stakeholders to promote and protect the rights of persons with disabilities.

However, in the light of Government of Sri Lanka been a signatory to the United Nations Convention on Rights of People with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the HRCSL says now an opportunity has opened up for a wider consultative process among the disabled community, Government sectors and Non-Government stakeholders to explore more effective methodologies to enhance rights and opportunities for people with disabilities taking account their capabilities and needs paving way for them to be included in a more holistic manner in the Country’s development and social agenda.

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka says it would also like to play the role of a moderator as the National Independent Authority for human rights in the Country, to facilitate a consensus among the disabled community, government sectors and local and International non-governmental sectors in order to secure and enhance better rights for persons’ with disabilities in our country.

HRCSL had, this week, organised a national consultation for 150 participants at the Human Rights Commission’s auditorium in collaboration with United Nations Programme on Human Rights.
