Amnesty International (AI) has launched a new campaign for human rights in Sri Lanka called “#OurFuture” which features posters in Sinhala, Tamil and English with some compelling images.
The posters were displayed at the UN in Geneva, where the UN Human Rights Committee recently reviewed Sri Lanka’s implementation of its obligations under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
Dr Manoharan, father of one of the murdered Trinco Five students, and Sandya Ekneligoda, wife of the disappeared journalist Prageeth Ekneligoda, went to Geneva for this session in order to demand justice from the Sri Lankan government. An Amnesty delegation accompanied them.
During the UN Human Rights Committee meeting the UN Committee had denied the assumption that it was attempting to pass judgment on Sri Lanka. Chairman of the UN Human Rights Committee Sir Nigel Rodley said that the Committee was not in the business of judging countries and comparing them. He said that the UN Human Rights Committee understands that there was a difficult conflict in Sri Lanka but that there still continues to be impunity and other concerns in the country.
Sir Nigel Rodley expressed these views as the UN Human Rights Committee wrapped up its two day review on Sri Lanka in Geneva. With the end of the review Sri Lanka was given 48 hours to submit written clarifications on some of the issues raised by the committee. (ER)
