Promoting Democracy, Upholding Human Rights

The Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Malala Yousafzai and Kailash Sathyarthi would not by itself bring peace to India and Pakistan, but it could be a vehicle to further the cause of peace between the two countries, speakers said at a seminar in New York on Sunday.

The seminar was organised by the Asian-American Network Against Abuse of Human Rights (ANAA) and the Association for India’s Development (AID).

“We owe it to our future generations,” said Dr Amna Buttar, founder president of ANAA, stressing the need to advocate for peace between India and Pakistan. ANAA is a volunteer organisation that aims to initiate public debate, and highlight the legal, social and psychological conditions that lead to human rights abuses in Pakistan.

She proposed the launch of a signature campaign urging the prime ministers of India and Pakistan to accept the Nobel Peace Prize winners’ invitation to attend the awards ceremony in December this year, a press release issued here said.
