Fading Democracy and Shrinking Civic Space in South Asia

SAHR held a virtual dialogue on Fading Democracy and Shrinking Civic Space in South Asia on 8 December 2020. The panel was moderated by Ms. Hina Jilani and the panelists were Ms. Indira Jaising,Ms. Vrinda Grover,Mr. Mohammed Tahseen,Ms. Shreen Saroor, Dr. Shahidul Alam and Dr. Paikiasothy Saravanamuttu.

The panelists spoke on the Repressive trends, measures and practices used against HRDs, the Legal and Regulatory Frameworks that exist to Restrict Freedom of Association in South Asia, the Role of the Judiciary and NHRCs in protecting HRDs, particular issues faced by WHRDs, Ultra Nationalism and Religious Extremism affecting the Work and Security of HRDs and what can be done towards protecting HRDs in South Asia.
