The High Court on Tuesday directed the government to submit all documents over licences issued to Tazreen Fashions Ltd in Ashulia, where a blaze killed 112 workers in November last year, to the court within two weeks.
In response to a writ petition, the court also asked the government authorities to submit all inspection reports on the fire safety and evacuation plan of the garment factory before it within six weeks.
It also issued a rule upon the government to explain in two weeks why its failure to follow the provisions of the Labour Act 2006 and the Fire Prevention Act 2003 should not be declared illegal.
In the rule, it asked the authorities to explain why they should not be directed to pay adequate compensation to the families of the workers killed and the injured, and to take legal action against the owner of Tazreen Fashions Ltd, petitioner’s counsel Barrister Imtiaz Farooq told The Daily Star.
The HC bench of Justice Hasan Foyez Sidique and Justice ABM Altaf Hossain came up with the order and rule after hearing a writ petition filed by Taslima Yeasmin, a teacher of Law Faculty at Brac University.
Taslima recently filed the petition as public interest litigation seeking necessary orders from the HC about the fire incident at Tazreen Fashions Ltd.
Secretaries to the ministries of finance, labour and home affairs, and four other government high officials concerned were made respondents to the order and rule.
Deputy Attorney General Bishwojit Roy represented the government.
